Title
De Hoorleende Kollendans, op Tilburn (The Dance of the Club-Footed Witches at Tyburn)
Description
English: Title page to a tract entitled "De Hoorleende Kollendans, op Tilburn", no. 25 in the series entitled "Esopus in Europa"; in the centre, an etching showing four witches gathered at Tyburn: Nemesis, seen from the back with raven's wings, skirt decorated with fleur-de-lis, a mask hanging at ther waist, and the feet of an eagle dangles spindles on threads; three-faced Hecate, naked to the waist and with eagle's feet, is sitting side-saddle on a goat; she wears a crown and holds a flaming torch in her right hand and a crook in her left. These two are within a cabalistic magic circle outside which, on the right, Busy-body, a spirit with four wings, bows his head to the ground, and, behind him, Turbulent Spirit, a naked black woman with flaming hair, a bellows hanging from her left wrist, flourishes snakes in her right hand and rings a bell with her left. Animals crouch beyond the circle. In the background, is a mound with a gallows from which hang a group of bodies, a gibbet from which hangs a body in chains and a man about to be beheaded; a sword of coins is being dragged by horses on a hurdle towards the place of execution; beyond is a city gate on which are displayed six heads. 1702

This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
Public domain

This work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 100 years or fewer.

This work is in the public domain in the United States because it was published (or registered with the U.S. Copyright Office) before January 1, 1929.

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.

Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
