Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built circa 1740 for Antonio De Mesa, a Royal Treasury Guard, during the First Spanish Period, this house was originally a one-story Coquina stone structure. In 1763, following the handover of control of Florida to the British, De Mesa and his family left the city for another Spanish colony. The house was used as an office by the colonial authorities during the British period, between 1763 and 1783, and was expanded during this time. The house was purchased in 1784, at the beginning of the Second Spanish Period, by Juan Sánchez, whom expanded the structure, adding a second floor and detached kitchen, with the Royal Spanish Treasury occupying part of the house during this time. In 1835, the house was purchased by James Lisk, whom built an addition to connect the kitchen to the rest of the house, covered the exterior with stucco, and painted the new exterior finish pink. In 1957, the house was renovated extensively by Mr. and Mrs. Bath, with the intention of trying to make it appear like a rural 18th Century Spanish Inn, which opened in 1959. This removed several important exterior features, including the stucco finish, and added inappropriate details like wrought iron security grates over the windows. In 1965, the St. Augustine Restoratio bought the house, the largest purchase in monetary terms that the organization undertook. The house was then transferred to the Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board in 1977, and restored it to look how it did when it was renovated by Lisk in 1835. Utilized for some time as San Agustín Antiguo, the outdoor museum that the organization operated in the city for some time, the house was meant to represent the Territorial period of Florida, shortly after its acquisition by the United States.
