Description
Nederlands: Omdat Jezus veel kritiek had op de schijnheiligheid van de religieuze leiders van zijn dagen, had Hij zich veel vijanden gemaakt. Uiteindelijk wisten ze Hem te pakken te krijgen en aan de Romeinse overheid voor te geleiden. Ze bewerkten de stadhouder Pilatus, zodat deze besloot Hem te laten kruisigen, ondanks het feit dat hij erkende geen schuld in Hem te vinden. Jezus moest zelf zijn kruis dragen naar de plaats van de terechtstelling even buiten Jeruzalem. Lukas vertelt, dat Jezus zelfs in die situatie kans zag wenende vrouwen te troosten [Lukas 23,27-31]. Hoewel geen van de evangelisten het uitdrukkelijk vertelt, heeft Hij volgens de overlevering op die kruisweg ook zijn moeder Maria ontmoet: een smartelijk gebeuren.
