[edit]DescriptionDeath eyes.jpg |
English: The hippocampus is the brain structure responsible for memory and learning functions and it is one of the two main regions where it is possible to find newborn neurons arising from a process know as adult neurogenesis. While these newborn neurons are brought to life, mature neurons already integrated in the granular layer may die due to cell death programme mechanisms such as apoptosis and as a consequence of different stimuli. Death eyes represents this dualism in murine hippocampus. Immunofluorescence techniques have allowed to stain newborn neurons with doublecortin antibody( in blue) and an already mature neuron undergoing the apoptotic process with fraction antibody (n grey). Neuronal nuclei were stained with DAPI (red). As a result, it is possible to observe how 'dead neuron' , similar to a skull, observes with its eyes how newbor neurons come to life. Confocal microscopy. |
