English: Seated in the second row are two identifiable members of the U-M faculty who were honorary members of this honorary society. Fourth from left is Robert Mark Wenley, a Scotsman who was chairman of the Philosophy Department, and the leading "star" of the Literary College in those years. Beside him, the whitehaired gent is Mortimer Elwyn Cooley, longtime Dean of the College of Engineering. A former Navy officer, hired in 1881, Cooley had been an early Engineering faculty member. His autobiography, "Scientific Blacksmith," is an entertaining account of his career, written when he was 88 years old. Nowhere in the book is Michigamua mentioned.
I believe that the room they have crammed themselves into was located in the original Michigan Union building, on State Street (site of the present Michigan Union), which was the former residence of Michigan Supreme Court Justice, and U-M Professor of Law, Thomas McIntyre Cooley (1824-1898) (who was but a distant relative of Mortimer Cooley, above). This may have been one of the formal parlors of that dwelling, which also was the boyhood home of the distinguished American Sociologist, Charles Horton Cooley (1864-1929), T. M. Cooley's son. |
