Summary

Description
English: Most Serbs are of the Orthodox faith and Easter is one of the most important and joyful holidays. Eggs are always painted for Easter, on Good Friday, the day when Jesus Christ was crucified, as a sign of mourning for him. Eggs are decorated in many modern ways today, but in the past, housewives had much smaller choices. Eggs were usually dyed with onions, that is, the onion peel would be put in water and eggs with it. The onion would release a dark brown color and thus color the eggs. An egg, a strawberry leaf, a rose or some other flower would also be placed on the eggs, then a dandelion, a clover leaf and everything else that could be found in the yard. Usually children would be sent early in the morning to collect these herbs and then help moms and grandmas to prepare them. Colored eggs would be coated with oil or grease to get the best possible shine and would be eaten only on the day of Easter, the day when Christ resurrected.
