| Description | Deerpath Inn in Lake Forest (1929). It is the town's oldest hotel. The original Deerpath Inn was founded in 1894 in the former home of Col. William Sage Johnson. In 1906, the property passed to Mary H. Patterson, who named it the Deerpath Inn. The inn was purchased by Edwin Burgess in 1924, who decided in 1928 to build a new building for it. Wealthy Lake Forest residents were interested in a new hotel building for the conveience of their friends and family. The 106-room building was built to the specifications of the Lake Forest zonging code, and thus could not be more than three stories high. Opening in 1929, the Great Depression forced the hotel out of business by 1932. In 1936, it was reorganized by board member Buckingham Chandler and found short-term prosperity, but a 1938 fire destroyed the third floor. Immediately after the fire, the hotel was rebuilt, and by 1939, the hotel was again prosperous. |
