Summary[edit]

Description
English: Autumn is usually associated with a deterioration of air quality in some parts of Europe. One of these areas is northern Italy as the alpine arc tends to trap pollutants in the Po Valley. These two images acquired by the Copernicus Sentinel-3 (above) and Copernicus Sentinel-5P (below) satellites show that on 18 October 2022, a thin aerosol layer and high concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) were present throughout the Po Valley (despite being high, NO₂ values are in line with those measured in 2021 at the same time of year). These environmental phenomena are caused by the presence of a strong high pressure system that has affected atmospheric circulation and caused widespread deterioration of air quality. More information on autumn air quality issues in the northern hemisphere can be found in an article published by the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service.
