Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Sam Dement, born 1920 as grandson to Oregon pioneer Samuel Dement, points with pride to his family's accomplishment after following the Oregon Trail westward in 1851. The Ranch is still an active part of the Oregon Century Farm and Ranch program which requires both at least one hundred years under the same family ownership and continuous status as a working ranch. More than 4,000 acres surround this large ranch house completed in about 1870 by the Haines family which had 15 children and sold to the Dements way back then. for history buffs, yes this is the famous Sam Dement, starting forward on the remarkable Oregon State basketball team of the early 1940s, State Senator and longest serving president of the local county fair and as fine a man as ever graced the American West. Today the ranch is not a token operation but part of one of the finest associations of beef production in Western America. The first Sam Dement joined up with the photographers great Grandfather Stanfield who in the 1850s headed up the local defense of settlers in a gathering at Jacksonville. RN Stanfield held 9 sections up near Yreka and was purveyor to the miners of Northern California, later he moved on to Umatilla, Oregon where he founded the Butter Creek Ranch of similar fame and whose son was a United States Senator in the Roaring Twenties. The Dements and Stanfields continued to support each other, for instance, when the market for D branded cattle dwindled in SW Oregon, Samuel drove the cattle to be marketed via Stanfield's miner supply stores in Eastern Oregon. These were rugged, loyal, talented westerners who lived the stories we love to hear over campfires in National Parks
