Avers : Légende centripète, en réalité en deux parties ou deux sens : CAR/ILo autour d’un point. Revers : Monogramme composé des lettres M et A sous un globule et un tilde. S’il existe une troisième lettre au monogramme, nous pourrions lire un S, mais absolument pas un R. Le style est celui du dernier monnayage mérovingien, avec des flans légèrement plus larges. Voir les deniers lus RACIO : Belfort, n°2986, 3708, 4032, 4587/4588 qui présentent un avers proche. Les deniers carolingiens de Pépin et à plus forte raison de ceux de ses fils Carloman et Charles sont différents, de flan encore plus large. Le monnayage de Carloman est tout à fait différent : il présente un monogramme très précis, composé des lettres CARLM. La lecture est aisée et en deux parties : CAR et ILO. Nous proposons une attribution à Charles Martel, le seul Charles dont on soit déjà certain de l’existence d’un monnayage provençal, connu par le trésor de Nice-Cimiez qui contenait sept exemplaires de flan plus étroit, entrés au Cabinet des Médailles de la BnF : Prou, Mérovingiens, n°119 à 121. |
