Summary
[edit]DescriptionDepot Street, Roxboro, NC (28221744408).jpg | These buildings along Depot Street in Roxboro, North Carolina are part of a lateral extension of downtown towards an old mill and the railroad tracks, where the town’s railroad depot was once located. I have a feeling that these buildings may have been somehow associated with the mill, with the two identical red and blue housing appearing much like mill village housing elsewhere in the southern US from the late 19th Century and early 20th Century, when textile mills uprooted themselves from New England and moved to the south in search of cheaper labor and lower taxes. The Green house may have been associated with the mill, but is very different in appearance and scale from the other two, and may have been a commercial structure at one point, judging by the odd false-fronts on the front. The two commercial buildings may have been independent, or the company store for the mill, but regardless gained a customer base and traffic from their proximity to the depot and mill. The houses are in various states of dilapidation and neglect, a result of the once-thriving community becoming one of the most impoverished in the state thanks to deindustrialization, among other factors. Today, the old mill is now the Roxboro Community School, which I was unfortunately unable to photograph due to an incoming winter storm that still stranded me on Interstate 40 for several hours trying to climb up to Asheville due to an inversion layer and ice, which made driving difficult, but I still made it home safe and sound. |
