Summary
[edit]DescriptionDestiny Church International - fmr Our Lady of Loretto RC Church - Buffalo, New York - 20200516.jpg |
English: Destiny Church International, 158 15th Street, Buffalo, New York, May 2020. One of the final works of noted Buffalo ecclesiastical architect Chester Oakley (dedicated 1951), the church's architectural style represents a fusion of Modernist architecture with elements of late-period Art Deco - the austere look of the brick façade and the boxy spire crowning the structure signal the former, while the bas-reliefs of kneeling angels and the lettering on the sign above the compound-arched main entrance testify to the latter. The building was conceived as the home of Our Lady of Loretto Catholic Church, a congregation that traces its history back to 1924, when the Buffalo Diocese, concerned about the possibility of a new Presbyterian mission making inroads among the heavily Catholic Italian-American population of this part of the West Side, established a new parish, purchasing the former Bethany Presbyterian Church despite a high asking price and placing Rev. Joseph Gambino in charge of the congregation. That church was razed in 1949 to make way for the one seen here, which continued as an active congregation until 2009, when it and Nativity R.C. Church on Albany Street were merged with Annunciation under the name Our Lady of Hope. Occupying the building today is Destiny Church International, a Pentecostal church with a majority-Hispanic congregation. |
