| Description |
English: The Rijal Dewali (Family God worship) ceremony happens every 5 to 7 years in Lung Village, a remote hilltop located in Pyuthan district of Nepal. The God worshipped is Dare Masta, one of the 12 Masta Deuta of Sinja, Jumla origin.
The last Dewali celebrations was in December, 2016 and next is expected to be this December, 2021. Over 175,000 people attended the last Dewali, which makes it one of the largest attended Ancestral God worship ceremonies that no one outside the community know about. The picture depicts Dhami (Ancestral priest) walking down a path where a procession is held for the flag of the ancestral god. During this walk, most Dhamis shake and recite their family lineage under trance. This image is taken just before trance of the man depicted with red scarf around his head in the picture. There are many Dhamis who attend the ceremony as can be seen from others even within the picture. |
