Dhankar Monastery, Spiti - a photographer’s delight

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Dhankar monastery located in Spiti valley at the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers is also known as Lha-od Gompa after its founder Lha-od, a popular lama (monk). It is believed that the name Dhankar has been derived from ‘Dhang’ meaning cliff and ‘kar’ meaning fort, which literally means ‘a citadel on a cliff.’ Having been listed as one of the hundred most endangered monuments in the world by the World Monuments Fund, Dhankar is one of the oldest monasteries in the valley and the mere sight of this monastery is an architectural marvel in itself.
