Summary

[edit]
Description
English: During the Indus civilization several percussion or leather instruments such as dhol existed. The dhol is depicted in the earliest Indian sculptures along with the tabla as one of the main percussion instruments of ancient Indian music. The Indo-Aryan word "dhol" or dholak appeared in Sangeetsara texts around 1800. Dhol is also mentioned in various Mangalkavyas of the Middle Ages. Dhol is a type of leather musical instrument. It is one of the folk instruments of North East India including West Bengal and Bangladesh. The sound is made by striking the leather lining with a stick. Dhol is a major instrument in various folk music performances. These drums are made by covering both sides with leather on a carved piece of wood. Dhol is a wooden shell with two open sides and hollow inside. Both sides are covered with leather. One side has thick skin, the other side has thin skin. In it, the drum beats in harmony with the rhythm with thick and thin sounds. The typical sizes of the drum vary slightly from region to region. The Dhol is played using two wooden sticks, usually made out of wood, cane, or also known as wickers cane.
