Summary[edit]
DescriptionDiagoras of Melos Burning a Statue of Herakles.jpg |
English: This is a pencil illustration drawn by Spencer Alexander McDaniel depicting a famous legend about the ancient Greek poet Diagoras of Melos, who is said to have burned a statue of Herakles to roast his lentils. This illustration was started in early 2018 and completed in March 2020.
In this picture, the elderly Diagoras is kneeling beside the fire where the wooden statue of Herakles is burning. Behind him on the wall is a badly damaged fresco of the goddess Athena. Beside him, lies a papyrus scroll containing writings of Demokritos of Abdera. Diagoras's son watches him burning the statue in horror from across the room. No one knows what Diagoras really looked like; this representation is imaginary. The anecdote depicted here is attested in ancient sources, but it is probably apocryphal. |
