Description
English: Diest

The Sint-Sulpitiuskerk in Diest is a Gothic parish church on the Grote Markt, where in 1618 Filips Willem, eldest son of Willem van Oranje (William of Orange) and his first wife Anna van Buren, was buried. The church takes its name from the canonized Sulpitius (7th century).

The church is an example of the Demer Gothic, built of ironstone and white limestone. The first architect of the church was a Frenchman, Pierre de Savoye. During its entire building process (from 1321 to 1534), a total of 18 architects are said to have been involved, including well-known master builders such as Sulpitius van Vorst and various members of the Keldermans master builders family. For example, Antoon Keldermans built the ambulatory between 1483 and 1489.

Although the construction of the church was completed in 1534, the building was far from being considered complete. From the original plan, 3 of the 5 radiant chapels were still missing and only the substructure of the western tower was finished.

A striking feature of the church is the crossing tower, which became known under the nickname "Mustard pot". A carillon was placed here in 1671, which today consists of 47 bells, 32 of which were cast by Pieter Hemony from Amsterdam. Teun Michiels and Wim Van den Broeck are city carillonneurs of Diest.

The interior houses many church treasures from different periods of art history. There is a late Gothic triumphal cross, a Renaissance tabernacle and a Baroque pulpit, as well as the baptismal font that was used for the baptism of the later saint Jan Berchmans.
