English: A notice on the site suggests (apart from the “fact” that the wishes of many of the visitors, whether believers or not, have been fulfilled) is was founded in the 4th or 5th century, has been restored repeatedly, lastly in the 17th century, and was the centre of the Patriarchate for a long time.
It is a Chaldean Catholic Church, Wikipedia gives "The Chaldean Catholic Church (Classical Syriac: ܥܕܬܐ ܟܠܕܝܬܐ ܩܬܘܠܝܩܝܬܐ; ʿītha kaldetha qāthuliqetha), is an Eastern Syriac particular church of the Catholic Church, under the Holy See of the Catholicos-Patriarch of Babylon, maintaining full communion with the Bishop of Rome and the rest of the Catholic Church. The Chaldean Catholic Church presently comprises an estimated 500,000 people who are ethnic Assyrians indigenous to northern Iraq, and areas bordering it in southeast Turkey, northeast Syria and northwest Iran." |
