Description

Acanthurus chirurgus specimen on display as part of the exhibit "Sailing for Science: The Voyage of the Blossom", hosted by the Cleveland Museum of Natural History in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States.

The three-masted sailing ship Blossom left the United States for Africa, the South Atlantic, and South America on a speciment collecting expedition in 1922. It returned in 1926 with more than 12,000 specimens.

Commonly called the doctorfish, doctorfish tang, barbero rayado, or cirujano rayado, this is a tropical marine fish common in the Atlantic Ocean. At its adult size, it is 15 inches long and weighs about 11 lbs. Its color varies from blue-gray to dark brown, with 10 to 12 faint vertical bars. The edges of the caudal, dorsal, and anal fins are blue. A sharp protrusion, called the "scalpel" protrudes from either side of the caudal (tail) fin.

This fish is found among rocky outcrops and coral reefs, where it feeds on algae and organic debris.
