English: The electrostatic machine known as the Van de Graaff generator was invented by Robert J. Van de Graaff in the USA by 1929 with the objective of generating high voltages for experiments in nuclear physics. It was first described in a short abstract in the Physical Review, vol. 38, p. 1919, 1931, and in more detail in 1933. By Dr. Antônio Carlos M. de Queiroz (in memoriam).
