English: A U.S. Navy sailor aboard the aircraft carrier USS Midway (CVA-41) guides a Douglas A-4C Skyhawk (BuNo 149490) of Attack Squadron 22 (VA-22) "Fighting Redcocks" using a "Tilly Bar" toward a catapult for launch, 26 May 1965. The Skyhawk was piloted by Lieutenant Junior Grade Tom Murray. VA-22 was assigned to Attack Carrier Air Wing 2 (CVW-2) aboard the Midway for a deployment to Vietnam from 6 March to 23 November 1965. The A-4C 149490 was shot down by ground fire on 24 August 1965. The pilot ejected and became a prisoner-of-war. Using a "Tilly Bar" to guide Skyhawks was necessary until nosewheel steering was incorporated with the A-4F model. |
