Summary
[edit]DescriptionDown Lane Park.jpg |
English: Two diagonal paths across the park. The one on the right - paved and lit - runs between the north-west and south-east corner into Ashley Road. It's a handy short-cut between Park View Road and Tottenham Hale station.
The other line between the trees is a desire line (also known as a desire path) between from Ashley Road to a Park gate near Holcombe Road. The official diagonal path was also once a desire line. Unsanctioned and resisted by our bureaucratic powers-that-be, because it cut across the marked-out football pitches. I'd like to think that the idea of sports pitches which aren't laid-out in strict orderly parallels to park fences gave the bureaucrats fretful nights and troubled days. They even went so far as to weld shut the gates at the north-west corner. Until I pointed out that this was a potential to the safety of park users. So eventually the path became "official". The powers-that-be do have a point, though. Overused "desire lines" can turn grass to packed mud. However, responding to desire lines by adding and then enlarging paths doesn't work either. You can end up with boring sterile shrinking patches of green between ever-widening asphalt and mud paths. Tottenham Green is an example. § Link to Google Street View.
