Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Dr. Francis M. Rich House, 460 Richmond Avenue, Buffalo, New York, January 2022. Occupying what was previously one of the last still-vacant lots in the neighborhood, this two-and-a-half-story home built in 1905 sports a composite exterior of stone, brown brick, stucco, and half-timbering, a hallmark of the unusual melding of Queen Anne and early-period Tudor Revival architecture that characterizes the building's style. The Tudor-derived half-timbering is especially evident on the dormer windows, which are additionally framed by exquisite decorative scalloped vergeboards. The lower stories are where the Queen Anne influences come into play, with the two-story polygonal bay window on the right suggestive of the form of a corner tower, and a partial-width gabled front porch framing an entrance with beveled-glass windows and sidelights. Dr. Francis Marion Rich (1947-1930) was the house's original owner; long one of the most prominent names in the local medican field, his obituary in the Buffalo Evening News cited him as "the family physician for many old Buffalo families". He lived in the house until his death.
