Notes

One of two drawings on the Château de Maulnes drawn by Du Cerceau for this album, see 1972,U.793 for comment on series. Building work for the château, property of the Duc d'Uzes and his wife, started in 1566; in 1570 the turret giving access to the château was modified; as it is visible on Du Cerceau's drawings we can assume they were executed between this date and 1573, when the Duc D'Uzes died (otherwise he would probably have been referred to as 'le feu Duc d'Uzes' in the descriptive notes, as he is in 'Les Excellents Bastiments de France', 1576). The château was not completed by the time Du Cerceau did his drawings; the fortifications notably were never finished, yet they do appear on the drawings; this is not the only exemple of Du Cerceau 'embellishing' reality, possibly because he was sometimes working from architectural drawings (and therefore projects showing a completed building), or perhaps because of a reluctance to draw an unfinished building, which would have diminish its splendour and its impact. However a note on the other drawing (1972,U.847) does allude to the unfinished state of the building. The plan of the interior of château itself is erroneous, as Du Cerceau based this particular part of his drawing on a project which had been abandoned, and not the actual building. Otherwise this is a fairly accurate representation.

For further comment on the drawings see Boudon/Mignot, 'Jacques Androuet Du Cerceau', Paris 2010, pp.136-139.

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.

Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
