Summary
[edit]DescriptionDryad and Boar Statue Bromsgrove. Photo by Phillip Medhurst 1992.jpg |
English: Dryad and Boar statue. High Street, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire. The modelling was by Louis Weingartner 1892, originally cast by The Bromsgrove Guild. This modern casting was made from surviving plaster moulds. The statue was situated outside the main Post Office when this photo was taken by Phillip Medhurst in 1992. The figures have an obvious affinity with plasterwork in “The Vines” public house in Liverpool and the locks on the gates of Buckingham Palace, both executed in the Bromsgrove Guild foundry and workshop. The plinth bears a bronze plaque with the following legend: “The Bromsgrove Guild was founded by Walter Gilbert circa 1900, attracting skilled craftsmen from throughout Europe until its disbandment in 1966. Evidence of the Guild’s fine work can be found in many parts of the world, the most famous example in this country being Buckingham Palace gates. Numerous local examples exist including much of the interior of Dodford church and the memorial windows in the cloisters of Worcester Cathedral. The original statue of the Dryad and Boar was sculptured in 1892 by Louis Weingartner later to become a principal member of the Guild and is located in Berne, Switzerland. The original mould of this statue was carefully restored by Henry Simons of Bromsgrove and was erected as part of the enhancement of the High Street in 1983.” Bronzework 1905.
