Description
English: Dual-mode transmission diagram, as described in US Patent 6,953,409 B2. The labels are:
  • TD = torque transfer device and/or torque damper
  • P1 = planetary gear set # 1
  • P2 = planetary gear set # 2
  • P3 = planetary gear set # 3
  • C1 = clutch # 1
  • C2 = clutch # 2
  • C3 = clutch # 3
  • C4 = clutch # 4
  • MG-A = motor-generator A
  • MG-B = motor-generator B
For clarity, the transmission fluid pump (shown in the patent as being driven by the ring gear in P1) is omitted. By varying the engagement of the four clutches, and the mode of the motor-generators, the system acts as a continuously variable transmission. In addition, it is capable of providing both parallel and series hybrid operation.
