Summary
[edit]DescriptionDuarte I Rei.PNG |
English: Detail of kneeling king in the "Panel of the Prince" (third panel of the St. Vincent panels, usually dated c.1470, attributed to painter Nuno Gonçalves). Figure is most commonly identified as King Afonso V of Portugal (aged 38 in 1470), the identification currently proposed by the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (MNAA) in Lisbon, the holder of the panels. A recent controversial book (Almeida and Albuquerque, 2000) disputes this identification, dates the painting 1445 and proposes instead it is an image of his father King Edward of Portugal (D. Duarte) (died 1438 at age of 47). |
