Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built in 1914, this Chicago School-style building was designed by Alvan Small for E. W. Eddy. The building takes cues from the work of Louis Sullivan in its ornamentation and design, due to Small’s prior associations with Sullivan, whom he worked for in 1899-1900. The building features a brick exterior with terra cotta trim around the first floor storefront, a prism glass transom above the storefront, bands of belt coursing and trim panels with Sullivanesque motifs, a recessed portion of the facade framed by a band of brick trim with five one-over-one double-hung windows in two ribbons, two engaged chamfered terra cotta columns with decorative Sullivanesque trim on the capitals, a cornice only as wide as the brick trim framing the windows at the base of the stepped parapet, two terra cotta relief panels with Sullivanesque trim, and a terra cotta parapet cap on the parapet that encloses the building’s low-slope roof. The building demonstrates the influence that Louis Sullivan had on commercial architecture built by architects that formerly worked for him, and is a contributing structure in the State Street Historic District, listed on the Wisconsin State Register of Historic Places.
