Acetazolamide

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This diagram summarizes the critical mechanism of action of acetazolamide. By inhibiting carbonic anhydrase, acetazolamide inhibits the conversion of CO2 and water to bicarbonate and protons, increasing the pH in both intracellular and extracellular environments. In addition to CO2 retention and increased blood flow, the acidic pH affects ASICs and modulates several receptors. These, in turn, decrease the seizure threshold of groups of neurons in the hippocampus, entorhinal cortex and piriform cortex
