Curiosity MastCam M-100 image of the rock target "Eaglesham" taken on Sol 2710 (March 21, 2020). This cross-bedded sandstone was deposited along the edge of Greenhaugh Pediment, an apparent alluvial fan or delta deposit. These rocks are likely composed of reworked sediments from higher up the slopes of Mt. Sharp. The materials were deposited at the mouth of a deep canyon carved into its northern flank, Gediz Vallis. Curiosity made a short detour onto the Greenhaugh Plateau to sample these rocks, as the planned route takes a circuitous route to the east to enter Gediz Vallis. Had the rover stuck to the original plan, the Greenhaugh Pediment rocks would not have been sampled for another year or two, when declining power output from Curiosity's RTG began to substantially limit its travel range. This rock was named after the town of Eaglesham, Scotland, on the outskirts of Glasgow. Image Credit: NASA / JPL / MSSS / Justin Cowart |
