Title
East Parade, Kensington - showing horse and carriage and tram
Description
The winter of 1916 in South Australia was one of the wettest on record. Rain disrupted events, traffic and daily life. The image, taken in August 1916, shows the mud and slush in East Parade, Kensington. Men, women and a schoolgirl alight from and board the electric tram, and pick their way through the quagmire to and from the nearby footpath. While the tram line does not appear affected at this point, the driver of a horse and buggy is trying to find the best route through the mud. A correspondent to the Mail penned some verses which included lines that fit the scene, 'Suburbanites trudge forth to graft/Through leagues of liquid mud/With grinding teeth they long to seek/The local council's blood.' (Mail, 19 August 1916, p10.)
