Ebierbing and his wife Tookoolito had a long association with whalers and explorers, including Groton whaling master Sidney O. Budington and Arctic explorer Charles Francis Hall. Captain Budington, a native of Groton, commanded the bark George Henry of New London during one of Hall's expeditions in 1860–1862, and was master of the vessel Polaris for Hall's ill-fated last polar expedition in 1871. Both Ebierbing (sometimes called "Joe" by the whalers) and Tookoolito were interpreters for Hall. They were brought to New London and Groton several times by Hall and Budington.
