Eclogite is a scarce, crystalline-textured, very high grade metamorphic rock dominated by reddish garnet and greenish omphacite pyroxene. It forms by deep burial metamorphism of mafic rocks - usually oceanic lithosphere that has been subducted deep into the mantle. If uplifted back to the surface, eclogite is often subjected to retrograde metamorphism, which alters its mineralogy. The weathered eclogite seen here appears to have a schistose texture. It is part of the Chatanika sequence in east-central Alaska. The precursor rocks may be Paleozoic in age, with metamorphism during the Mesozoic. Locality: borrow pit along the Elliott Highway, north of the town of Fox & south of the Chatanika River, east-central Alaska, USA |
