Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Edward H. Chase House, 44 Winspear Avenue, Buffalo, New York, February 2022. Although this cozily-proportioned home falls into the Bungalow school of Arts & Crafts residential architecture, its unusual façade features a number of unique applications of stylistic tropes. For instance, the triangular knee braces that are commonly seen supporting projecting eaves are present in proliferation not only on the gable itself, but also supporting the small shed-roof canopy over the attic window. More unusual is the placement of the wide brick chimney, directly on the main façade, off-center. Notably, excavators digging the foundation of the home in 1912 unearthed a human skeleton on the site, which was later identified as that of an American Indian and sent to the coroner for reburial. Original owner Edward H. Chase (1859-1933) was a longtime employee of the Anchor Line of lakegoing steamers, working as a cashier in a ship commissary. Chase and his wife, Lois née Raymond, lived in the house until his death.
