Description

El Paso & Southwestern 2-8-0 65 was built by Baldwin in December, 1906, as part of an order for two engines, EP&SW 65-66. There were ten engines of this group, 60-64 built in May, 1906, 65-66 built in December, and 67-69 built in January, 1907.

In the general renumbering of September, 1913, this group was split in two. EP&SW 60-64, the ones built in May, 1906, became class F6s-48 and were numbered EP&SW 280-284.

EP&SW 65-69 became class F7s-48, and were renumbered EP&SW 285-289.

Superheaters were added in 1913 and 1914. and cylinders were bored out three inches larger on both classes.

This engine became EP&SW 285. It was rebuilt with the larger cylinders and superheater in February, 1914.

In November, 1924, Southern Pacific bought the El Paso & Southwestern, and this group became SP 3445-3449. This engine became SP 3445.

SP 3445-3449 became SP class C-21. These engines were quickly leased to the SPdeM, starting with this engine on December 31, 1925. This group was reclassified C-27 by 1930.

On April 1, 1930, this engine was converted from coal to oil at Empalme, Sonora.

It was returned to the Southern Pacific on August 29, 1941, and renumbered SP 3445 on May 22, 1942.

It was rebuilt on January 19, 1949, at El Paso, with new valves, pistons, and running gear.

When the Mexican federal government bought the SPdeM in December 21, 1951, this engine became Ferrocarril del Pacifico 645. It was retired December 15, 1955.
