Elasmotherium sibiricum illustration informed by skeletal remains, it’s contemporary the woolly mammoth and it’s closest living relative the white rhino

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Illustration of Elasmotherium sibiricum based on skeletal remains found on the Eurasian grasslands, alongside its closest living relative the white rhino and it’s contemporary the woolly mammoth. Here you can see the nose is flat, the Elasmotherium’s anatomy indicates it lived in open, grassy plains, grazing almost entirely on grass and hence would have had a flat nose suited to such grazing (like it’s closest living relative, the white rhino). The coat is also woolly, like it’s contemporary the woolly mammoth. Preserved woolly mammoth specimens found in permafrost, give us clues as to the likely coat of Elasmotherium sibiricum. Scientists are hopeful that Elasmotherium specimen could still be found, and finally end the debate as to the length of their horn. Illustration by Nicole Wassall, with thanks to Prof Adrian Lister Merit Researcher Natural History Museum London.
