Electron movement along the electron transport chain during oxidative phosphorylation

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Generalized model of the electron transport chain. D and D+ represent reduced and oxidized forms, respectively, of an electron donor or carrier, whereas A and A- represent oxidized and reduced forms, respectively, of an electron acceptor. Electrons are transferred from the donor to the acceptor along three proteins. As the electrons move along the proteins, hydrogen ions are pumped outside of the membrane. Hydrogen ions move back to the interior at ATP synthase, which catalyzes phosphorylation of ADP. Note that the make-up and configuration of the electron transport chain varies among metabolic groups. This figure is based on Figure 1 of Jin and Bethke (2002) Biophysical Journal v 83, 1797-1808.
