Rückseite: F-A. Senkrecht stehendes stilisiertes geflügeltes Blitzbündel in Olivenkranz. Kommentar: Die Münzen von Elis tragen den Stadtnamen FAΛEION meist in abgekürzter Form. Der griechische Buchstabe Digamma (F) wird als W-Laut ausgesprochen. Elis wurde 471 v. Chr. durch einen Zusammenschluss von Orten im Peneiostal gegründet, bereits um 570 v. Chr. hatten die Eleer ihren Einfluss bis auf das Alpheiostal ausgeweitet, so dass sie seitdem auch das Heiligtum von Olympia verwalteten. Der Beginn der elischen Münzprägung wird mit diesem Zusammenschluss in Verbindung gebracht. In den Münzbildern wird auf Zeus und Hera, die Hauptgötter von Olympia, Bezug genommen. Auf vorliegendem Exemplar werden die Hauptattribute des Zeus der Adler und das Blitzbündel gezeigt. Seltman sah auf dem Pappelblatt die Abkürzung einer Stempelschneidersignatur ΔA, welche gelegentlich auch auf Rückseiten der Münzserie von Elis erscheint. Literatur: C. T.
