Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This masterpiece is allotted to the Sculptor called “the Master of Chaource” 1515. This work is regarded as the most remarkable entombment. The seizing impression which emerges from this masterpiece does not leave indifferent any as of its visitors. Crypt of the church Saint Jean-Baptiste de Chaource,Aube.

The name Maître de Chaource is used by art historians to refer to an artist with an enigmatic and controversial identity. The name is often associated with Troyes artist Jacques Bachot, with a number of orders surviving to this day to prove his existence. He is the author of several masterpieces. His style was sometimes imitated without to reach the emotional intensity of the Master. The style of the Maître de Chaource is characterised by its indwardness and restraint. His subjects have a dignified appearance, are of ample build and have faces that belie reserved melancholy and subtle psychological variety. The Master's aesthetic ideal is characterised throught the common features of his sculptures: large eyes, a perfectly straight nose and an understated mouse.

His work includes the Sainte Marthe at the church of Madeleine in Troyes, The Vierge de Pitié in Bayel, the Deposition in Villeneuve l'archevêque (Yonne) in 1528 and the entombment in Chaource Sculpted in 1515.
