Summary

[edit]
Description

Epidotic granite dike in the Precambrian of Minnesota, USA.

This is part of a famous outcrop in northeastern Minnesota - Confusion Hill. These are intrusive igneous rocks (principally dark-colored diorite at this spot) of Late Archean age, part of the Giants Range Batholith. The greenish and pinkish structure is an epidotic granite dike that has intruded through the host rock. The greenish mineral is epidote, a calcium hydroxy-aluminoferrosilicate, Ca2(Al,Fe)3(SiO4)3(OH). The pinkish mineral is potassium feldspar, a potassium aluminosilicate, KAlSi3O8.

Geologic unit & age: Giants Range Batholith, Neoarchean, 2.674 to 2.682 Ga

Locality: Confusion Hill outcrop - roadcut on the eastern side of northbound Rt. 169/Rt. 53, immediately north of roadside rest stop, northwestern side of Lookout Mountain, Laurentian Divide, just north of the town of Virginia, central St. Louis County, northeastern Minnesota, USA (47° 34' 40.71" North, 92° 32' 37.21" West)
