Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The former Erie Railroad freight depot, 391 Exchange Street (as seen from the Louisiana Street overpass bridge over Interstate 190), Buffalo, New York, August 2020. It's not entirely clear when this long, slender brick edifice was constructed - this westernmost stretch of the Erie Railroad tracks was laid about 1850, and the depot appears in its present configuration in the 1872 G. M. Hopkins & Co. Atlas of the City of Buffalo, the first to show individual buildings; it's likely that it was built in stages between those two dates. At any rate, it's the sole survivor of what were once fourteen freight transfer stations that served Buffalo in this era of local railroad history, and it's a relatively intact representative example of mid-19th century depot architecture. The building now serves as the Buffalo branch offices of the Amrex Chemical Company, a wholesale distributor of industrial chemical products as well as rock salt, de-icing products, and swimming pool chemicals.
