Ernst Kietz (1815-1892) was born in Leipzig. From 1831-38 he attended the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts and then went to Paris, where he was trained by the portrait painter Delaroche. In Paris he met Richard Wagner who eventually became a close friend. Between 1841 and 57 he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon with portraits of famous personalities from his circle of friends of artists from theater and music. In 1870 he returned to Germany and devoted himself to teaching. He became a drawing teacher of both princesses of Schleswig-Holstein as well as the Princess Caroline Mathilde of Saxony.
