"A partir de modelos iconográficos marianos cultivados por otros artistas en Nueva España, José de Ibarra presenta un ciclo narrativo que comprende la Natividad de la Virgen, la adoración de los pastores, la presentación de Jesús en el Templo, la Ascensión. Pentecostés, la Asunción y, como corolario, la poderosa imagen de la Virgen del Apocalipsis que encuentra espejo en esta galería De bondad y malignidad. Con el modelo rubensiano que inspiró a Miguel Cabrera y a Ibarra, la mujer vestida del sol recuerda a aquella realizada para el presbiterio de la Iglesia Catedral de Santa María en Frisinga. Alemania, de la autoría del pintor germano-flamenco. El arcángel san Miguel, con espada flamigera, combate a la bestia apocaliptica entre contrastes lumínicos que dramatizan la escena. El gesto que Ibarra replicó en la obra que custodia la Pinacoteca de la Profesa, en el momento en que el Padre entrega la vara al Niño, evoca la visión de san Juan en Patmos: habrá de regir con una vara de hierro."
