Description

Das Esperstedter Ried erstreckt sich unweit von Bad Frankenhausen zwischen den Ortschaften Oldisleben, Esperstedt und Seehausen. Es ist eine ca. 500 ha große abflusslose Feuchtsenke, die durch Auslaugung der in ca. 300 m Tiefe liegenden Salzschichten entstanden ist. Dieser Prozess setzt sich langsam aber stetig fort. Zeuge dafür ist das aufsteigende Salzwasser, welches in Trockenzeiten offene Bodenstellen mit einer weißen Kruste überzieht.

Sowohl von der Flächengröße als auch von der Anzahl der Salzpflanzenarten handelt es sich um die bedeutendste Binnensalzstelle Thüringens, wenn nicht sogar Deutschlands.
