Summary[edit]

Description Detail of a blue-ocean ship from Luf off the coast of Papua New Guinea. This boat was constructed in 1890 and brought to Berlin in 1904. It was used by the native population of Luf for trade and warfare. For longer journeys into the open sea it could transport up to 50 persons. A platform was used to transport goods. To stabilise the ship depending on the winds, the crews would move to different locations on the ship, the platform, and a small "bridge". The ship itself was carved out of a single, large treetrunk. Plant adhesive was used for insulation against the water. The whole ship was constructed without a single nail, all parts are held together with plant material. The rectangular sails are typical for the region, but unusual for the wider Oceanic region. This ship is the last of its kind and kept at the Ethnologisches Museum, Berlin-Dahlem. The population of Luf became extinct in 1940.
