Description
English: Competition catalogue: Photo of the shop window of F. Hengstmann Porzellanwarenhandlung. Participation in the Berlin shop window competition 1910. Award: Diploma. Evaluation text in the appendix (translated): "The decorations of the company, which has been in existence for around a century and is one of Berlin's first large-scale manufacturers of artistic porcelain and valuable crystal, attracted widespread attention, which was recognised by the award of a diploma. With great skilfulness in the overall decorative effect as well as in the individual pieces, countless larger and smaller objects were brought together and showed, in a narrow and yet exhaustive framework, a rich overview of what art has produced in the wide-ranging field of porcelain in the course of various eras. One of the two large display windows was completely filled with the products of the Royal Saxon Porcelain Manufactory in Meissen, which the aforementioned company has represented for 60 years. Visitors were given a marvellous overview of the most exquisite works of sculptural and decorative art as well as those for everyday use. The graceful Rococo performances are combined with modern works that show how serious the artistic endeavours of the current directors of this manufactory are and what excellent artistic powers they have at their disposal. A wealth of colour and beauty, richness and grace, poetic dreams of graces and nymphs, cupids and cupids, gods and heroes seem to have been realised. Plates and vases bud and blossom, and there is probably no more beautiful ornament to the home than those clocks, crowns and other lighting fixtures, those vases, plates and bowls, those countless delicate knick-knacks created by a refined artistic taste and a technique at the height of performance. The second display window presents porcelain products in the genre of Old Vienna, the famous Copenhagen manufactories, the French National Manufactory in Sevres, the crystal vases from Baccarat in Paris and de Val St. Lambert in Brussels, as well as those from England and America in surprisingly rich abundance. Even among these hundreds of objects, there is nothing that does not delight and that has not taken on an artistic form despite being intended for the home and family."
