English: This story brings together the memories of the contributor's father and maternal grandfather.
Auguste Maline, originally from Martinique, enlisted at the age of 19 and fought on the Chemin des Dames. Wounded in the foot and head by shrapnel, he was hospitalised in Orléans where he had to be trephined. During his convalescence he worked in the laundry of the establishment. The individual photographs of him in military dress taken in the studio at the time of his incorparation, and again at the end of the war, show, in an elegant posture, the self-confidence and the playful yet theatrical side of the character who proudly carries his role. Was this a foreshadowing of what was to come in his descendants? His eldest son, Jean, born after the war, became the first West Indian member of the Comédie Française. Henri Chapel, of Swiss origin, joined the French Army of the East as a Maréchal des Logis, after a stint in Italy, where he served in signals. He was cited in the regimental roll of honour for bravery in May 1917Français : L'histoire réunit le souvenir du père et du grand-père maternel du contributeur.
