Family tree Karl Ciesluk’s wood sculptures at Remic Rapids in Ottawa, Ontario. The three figures (perhaps a family) have been carved out of three trees along the Ottawa River. Unfortunately, at this time there is no information on-site identifying either the title of this art installation or the artist. Happily, Google was able to provide me with the name of the artist who created this beautiful installation. Sadly, the title of this installation still remains unknown, at least to me. Karl Ciesluk is an internationally renowned Ottawa-based sculptor and land artist, many of Karl’s public art installations can be found in Ottawa. Karl’s self-described aim is “to benefit both the artistic and general community by introducing them to an innovative Art Form they can accept and appreciate. Living Organic Art such as this enhances the city, something needed in the urban environment, and at the same time exposing and opening the public to a NEW ART FORM of LAND ART”. To achieve this aim, Karl has travelled to all corners of the world creating living organic art. [1] In 2013, while working on an art project in Vättis, Switzerland, Karl was asked why he makes art, and whether his art has a political or societal meaning [2]. His response: “I am addicted to creating, and trying to be original. It is for my personal satisfaction. My work being Land Art, it obviously takes place in the landscape and mainly relates to nature. As for titles: They come to me eventually. I use them to point the viewer in a direction. I use "no title" when I cannot figure out where the idea or piece came from, but that is seldom. My titles can change depending on whether I want to create a different meaning.”[2] Sources: [1] karlciesluk.blogspot.com [2] www.skulpturenweg-vaettis.ch/en/besucher/wp2013_ciesluk.html |
