| Description | A slightly more distant view of the Hang Dau water tower in Hanoi, Vietnam. This water tower was built in 1894, before Long Bien Bridge, located at the crossroads of several streets. This water tower was the first work marking the transformation of Hanoi into an urban center- prior to this, Hanoi residents were using well water or water from lakes and ponds. Although this historic water tower was not damaged during the wars, it lost it's functionality in the 1960s consequent to the opening of a modern water works plant elsewhere in Hanoi. However, the underground pipe is still connected to the city’s water pipe system. This Hang Dau water tower was almost torn down recently to build more shops but was saved the indignity. For years, the tower was surrounded by many stalls, but in 2003, these stalls were closed. Renovations to the tower have been carried out off and on and there is a proposal to convert it into a water works museum sometime in the future. The building is currently not in use.
