Junto con el faro d'Artrutx en la costa de Menorca baliza el canal que separa las islas de Mallorca y de Menorca en su punto más estrecho. La primitiva instalación óptico-luminosa para luz blanca variada por destellos rojos cada dos minutos y la linterna fueron suministradas por la casa francesa Sautter; estando constituida la fuente de luz por una lámpara Legrand de aceite de oliva la cual fue posteriormente adaptada para el consumo de parafina de Escocia y petróleo como iluminantes por medio de mecheros Dotty. A partir de 1912 se introducen varias modificaciones hasta que en 1960 se inicia la electrificación, disponiendo una línea de media tensión para unirle con Cala Ratjada y montando dos grupos electrógenos e instalaciones complementarias para el servicio eléctrico.
